Johanna Kinkel (1810 - 1858, previous marriage surname Mathieux) was born in Bonn and studied music first with Franz Ries, who had been one of Beethoven's teachers. She wrote this work, her opus no.1 when she was just 19 years old.l A few years later she studied composition in Berlin where the work was performed again at a birthday party in the von Arnim household. After decades of neglect it is being republished and modern audiences are discovering its delights. >

A transcription for sextet (wind instruments and piano) is also available which can be performed on its own or used to accompany singers in the Vogelkantate .
