Nothing sentimental about these two short pieces, which should be played with a strong beat and character. They make an interesting and attractive introduction to Baroque music as well as giving a historical context to the era. The use of drum beats in the performance and accompaniment play-alongs aid the style.
The original description of Warlike Musick is "a Choice Collection of Marches & Trumpet Tunes for a German Flute, Violin or Harpsichord by Mr. Handel, St Martini and the most Eminent Masters London. Printed for I Walsh in Catherine Street in the Strand". The New German Flute Magazine was one of a number of music periodicals published by Harrison. Handel several times found himself in the position of being required to write music celebrating war for instance after King George II led troops into Battle in the War of Austrian Succession and later after the suppression of the Jacobite rebellion.
The included flute duet* is the special feature of this edition, allowing the work to be performed by 2 equal flutes with or without a piano. Flute 1 has the complete flute solo, while the accompaniment is compressed into a single line for flute 2.
