Introduction by Renata Penezić (Associate Professor of flute, Zagreb Academy of Music and solo flutist, Zagreb Philharmonic)
The Awakening Boogie
The interesting melody and dance character are going to be great motivators for practicing these new flute pieces by Marin Rabadan. The themes and technical demands are developed brilliantly through each level. Awakening Boogie is perfect for learning chromatic shifts and for practicing the accuracy of fingerings. Rhythmical richness in both the flute and piano parts will help to overcome even the most difficult rhythms in a fun way. It also will challenge us to learn to listen to and play with the accompaniment to produce a kind of flute and piano conversation.
Rabadan’s music is inspired by Cimmeria, ‘the Land of Darkness and Deep Night’ and Conan, the fearless barbarian, as described in the books by the American fantasy writer, Robert E. Howard (1906-1936). Cimmeria is a country of wild forest and mountains that are usually covered in snow all the year round. Its inhabitants are barbarian tribes, descendants of formerly highly developed Atlantans, who were forced to leave their homes and move away after a natural disaster. With such an imaginative story it is not going to be difficult to come up with a musically convincing interpretation and, as the melodies are ‘catchy’, it will be a joy for the interpreter to practice these pieces and for the audience to listen to them. Marin’s music is intended and suitable for all age groups. The biggest challenge facing the flutist will be the length and the shaping of the phrases - so it will be good practice for anyone who wants to improve their breathing technique.
