Dramatic and powerful, it is surprising that this choral work is not more often performed. We really like it (and just listen to those 'fat' trombone notes at 1'.03" - wow!).
Sgambati's birth fell midway between those of Verdi and Puccini, so he was a composer in Italy during the pinnacle of its operatic achievements, and this choral work reflects the influence of those times. Melodic and spectacular, it is the closest that Sgambati came to writing an opera and, in my opinion, it stands alongside the other great choral work of that period,Verdi's Requiem (composed 20 years earlier). Sgambati composed Libera Me in 1895 for the funeral of King Victor Emmanuel II in Rome, and then later incorporated it into his own larger Requiem.
As well as the vocal score, it is possible to purchase a PDF choir edition licensed to print up to a maximum of 60 or 150 copies. (or we can supply printed choir editions by demand).

Sgambati 's orchestral music is better known and more frequently performed, since it was the subject of special research by Roz Trubger, who also reconstructed and then published the first edition of his 2nd symphony (premiered, Rome February 2014)
