If you like Schubert's 'Arpeggione' sonata, you will enjoy this substantial Early Romantic work for flute, which is a wonderful addition to the advanced flute player's repertoire. Composed by Macfarren the 'English Mendelssohn', the piano and flute share and discuss the music in true sonata style, with all four movements presenting technical challenges for both players. Macfarren was blind when he composed the work and had to rely upon the services of an amanuensis. The sonata is dedicated to Oluf Svendsen, who probably gave its first performance in London on May 2nd 1883. Tia Jaynes is the first flute player ever to record this sonata.
