An interesting early work by an British woman composer - English music with a strong hint of Brahms influence. The piano and flute share the limelight in this piece, so it requires a strong tone projection from the alto flute.

SAMPLE:

Dame Ethel Smyth was an unconventional woman who never did anything in half measures. Born in Surrey, she early demonstrated her stubborn nature by locking herself into her bedroom and generally making her parents’ lives miserable until they agreed to allow her go to study music in Leipzig. Her early compositions reflect the influence of the people that she met there including Brahms and Tchaikovsky.  Roz is a champion of Ethel Smyth's music and gave a talk about her at the BBC Proms in 2008.
